Local Search Ranking Factors 2013

Let the Kids on the Grass

“My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, “You’re tearing up the grass.” “We’re not raising grass,” Dad would reply. “We’re raising boys.” – Harmon Killebrew

When I saw this today I thought of the times I told the kids to not play on the front grass because it would tear it up.  If you have young kids, let them play on the grass. The grass grows, the kids grow; the grass is still out there but the kids are grown and on their own.

Google Says Links In Press Releases Should Be Nofollowed

http://www.seroundtable.com/google-press-releases-nofollow-17151.html

Google says they are not natural links and are advertisement. I think PR links are natural, but that’s just me.

If you took Google’s push on no-follow to the nth degree there would be no more links. Then we’d be back to on-page signals. Maybe social media but I think that’s crap because it’s so easy to manipulate.

Google spends so much time trying to Band-Aid I think their algorithm is broken and even though they hype new ranking ideas, patents, etc. that they are stuck with this huge mammoth ranking algorithm. They have probably lost control of the million and millions of lines of code; but, just a skeptical guess.

Surround Yourself with Wise People

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. – Proverbs 15:22

This is great advice for a spiritual life and for business. Surround yourself with wise counsel; people that will tell you when you have a good idea, and more importantly, when you have a bad idea.

More SEO Spam Email

In addition to my internet marketing business I also own an online store. I get emails like the following everyday. If you get these, run, don’t hide, just run. There is no way to do this kind of thing without breaking  the major search engines rules. If you do, your site will be banned and not show up at all in search.

Let me introduce you our patent pending internet advertisement technology which will instantly bring your website on first page of all major search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing without Pay Per Click competition.

As I have already wrote, you don’t have to worry about competition, because once you purchase a keyword, no other company can purchase it during the whole year. You will have exclusive rights on your keywords during first year and you will also have first right of renewal.

It’s better to see than to hear about our technology on our website.

Huntsville SEO Firm Discusses the Many Mysteries Behind Good SEO

The following is a guest post written for Marketing on the Web (www.marketing-ontheweb.com), a Huntsville Alabama  SEO firm specializing in search engine optimization, social media, and marketing on the internet.

The algorithms of the search engines do advance more and more with each passing day as engineers and programmers continue to come up with ways to deliver the best search results. SEO specialists have to be on their top game in order to help deliver good website rankings for their clients. A lot of different strategies and techniques must be employed that take a great deal of time, effort and energy.

To Know the Search Engines

Bing, Yahoo, Google, and all the minor search engines are working in competition with one another to help deliver the very best search results. Each and every one of these search engines has complex algorithms for the purpose of revealing the most relevant of all results for the top query. In order to achieve this result, the search engine’s algorithms will need to separate any results that lack relevancy or can be considered spam sites.

At one time, owners of a site were able to beat the algorithm by merely stuffing a page with keywords and similar keyword phrases. Many sites that would show up in the search results would not exactly have very much to do with the actual query that was made. Now,  sites of this nature are immediately recognized and given a less than desirable ranking by the search engines.

Any site that follows the less than ethical practice of keyword stuffing will be blacklisted rather quickly. That means the site will not be recognized by the search engines, essentially the site is then put out of business.

To Wear the White Hat

So clearly, “cracking” the algorithm code is not a viable option. Sadly, there will be quite a number of SEO companies that will attempt to use these troubling and illegal “black hat” techniques as a means to taking a short cut to getting the task at hand done. These services might make a host of huge promises, but you really have to avoid being taken in by their claims. Never lose perspective that if your SEO consultant is employing questionable practices or he will not clearly share his strategy with you, it might be wise to find a new consultant. It is true “white hat” or legal techniques and practices can take a much longer time to yield results, but the results that are achieved will be better in the long run. + Read More

Hey Email Spammer – Google Search Drives a Lot of Traffic

Love these email solicitations I receive. Just don’t listen to them or check out the facts. Here’s one from this morning:

It’s a fact:  more people find out about your business on Facebook or Twitter than on search engines.  Making these sites work maybe tricky for you, but it’s business as usual for us.  Let us improve your visibility and enhance your image.  It’s part of our complete  Internet Marketing package.  We’ll be more than your friends — we’ll be your partners.

Sent from a gmail account of course! See my previous post.

Here are the statistics on a couple of accounts I manage that are well positioned on Facebook and Twitter.

E commerce Site:

  • 60% of traffic comes from Google
  • <2% of all traffic to the site comes from Facebook and Twitter

Law Site:

  • 50% of traffic comes from Google
  • 5% from Facebook

What this tells me is that I need to build up more traffic from other sources but for now Google is the big dog when it comes to site traffic. We are constantly working on building our Facebook, and other social media, presence. It’s a good idea! But, it is not where the bulk of your site traffic will come from today.

SEO Spam

Being in the SEO business, this article gave me a good Monday morning smile.  SEO’s sharing SEO Email Spam.

Because I own an e-commerce company and manage the internet marketing for many clients, I probably get more than my fair share of SEO solicitation spam.  They always strike me as annoying, deceptive, and normally just wrong. My favorite is one I get for my Buskerdoo ecommerce business. It goes something like, “We’ve noticed that your business is not on page one of Google for the top searches in your industry. We can…” I want to answer but know that will just prompt more spam. My answer would be something like, “Are you kidding me, did you even do a search for my top terms. I’m a full time SEO and I have over 200 top terms for this business on page one of Google. This business gets about $25,000 a year in “free” SEO and doesn’t need any help from someone that spams me using a gmail account or a non-existent domain name, and yes I checked.”

There are no free or cheap rides in the internet marketing business. If someone is telling you that they will have your site ranked on page one of Google in no time and it will only cost $200 a month, run!
